Final issue of the 60th volume of Target ends a year when the magazine and its readers looked back on those six decades. During the year there were gifts for the wonderful band of distributors, advertisers and, of course, readers. As always the front page of this issue features the winner of the Christmas light competition and on Fun Night Charlie James will listen to the countdown then press the switch to light up his design.
Fun Night details are on page 4 with a map of the layout of stalls and events. Santa will be there in his new grotto ready to talk to the children and make a note of their present requirements. As usual the road closure will make it safe to wander around, enjoy the stalls, sample the food and drink while meeting friends and having a great time. Don’t miss it.
Then the next day, on Saturday 7 December, there will be a festive Christmas Market in and around the community centre and library with over 70 stalls. See the advertisement on page 7. Parish Council report on page 8 looks back over the year and their events. Then they encourage everyone to take advantage of their Christmas tree recycling scheme when you can take your live tree down to the council offices in Wooburn Green and it will be chipped for use around the parish.
Pictures from the visit celebrating 21 years of the twinning association feature on page 13. Happy faces and there were some on the first visit in 2003. Community centre news on page 18 has details of the 46th Carol Concert, and a Tea Dance to brighten a January afternoon. Robin Hood is this year’s panto from Forum Players with all the details of show times and the special free performance for seniors. This is not to be missed.
River News is the new Target feature with stories about life on our wonderful River Thames and including news about the challenges for wildlife. Husband-and-wife team of Cindy and Dominic Smulders have taken on this in memory of former columnist Peter Osborne. Asking river people to be their eyes and ears the couple will ensure that River News will maintain a great tradition into 2025 and beyond.
Wooburn Green litter pickers feature on page 25 and are happy to help keep the village looking good. On page 26 I remember looks back on changes over 60 years. Then on page 27 youthful artistic talent is featured with the winners of the Junior Craft Show along with some of the work submitted. Wonderful to know that there is so much local talent among our young people.
Shortlands features on page 29 with a report on the visit of John Shortland to talk about the department store that was a firm favourite in Bourne End. Past Times on page 32 tells the story of the Day Care Centre – from the early plans in the 1970s and a community supported building to how it is now. Looking back there’s a Wooburn connection with world famous lady pilot, Amy Johnson, and a local historian is trying to find more information. Read the fascinating story on page 33.
Calendar on page 35 details activities over the months of December and January then there’s the Falcon Quiz on the back page to set you thinking about the world of panto
